A Hot Night Out for Art Lovers

Hawai‘i’s premiere opera theatre entertains the LGBT community with a fantastic evening affair.

In Hawai‘i, the Hawaii Opera Theatre (HOT) season is a reason to don your most dashing duds, rub shoulders with art lovers, and then sit back and enjoy a magical performance … until you are sitting on the edge of your seat from all that opera drama. The season runs from October through April, during which talented singers come from around the world to take part.

On Friday, February 12, the theatre will host its second annual HOT Out, a VIP event for the LGBT audience centered around the debut of A Midsummer Night’s Dream. Basically, HOT Out means: a stellar opera showing enjoyed from the best seats, plus posh affairs including a pre-show party with drinks and appetizers and a stimulating VIP reception at intermission, champagne included. Says HOT Executive Director Simon Crookall, “Guests of HOT Out can expect a spectacular night at the opera, with a pre-show mixer at the Honolulu Club and then top-price seats to A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

Pending pomp aside, this event is all about A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Shakespeare’s legendary play interpreted for opera in 1960 by Benjamin Britten and stage directed for the first time by HOT’s Henry Akina. With handsome counter-tenor Daniel Bubeck championing the role of Oberon, the trouble-making fairy king, the night is certain to be an on-pitch, out-of-hand-fun kind of night.

A bit about A Midsummer Night’s Dream:

A well-known tale that never gets old, A Midsummer Night’s Dream is Shakespeare’s most popular comedy of errors. When four lovers flee from urban Athens into an enchanted forest, little do they know that they have stumbled into another loverʻs feud between a fairy king and his queen. When this king sends out his mischievous sprite, Puck, to use a magic flower to enchant his queen, all magical love-hell breaks loose.

Set in dual locations, a mythical Athens, and an enchanted forest, this playful fantasy explores three very different realms – that of the fairies, of the nobility, and of the working class. Originally debuting in June of 1960 at the Aldeburgh Festival, Britten gave new life to a charming classic. Now, HOT makes the show its own.
